# stateUpdate

```typescript
stateUpdate(update: SessionUpdate): undefined | StateUpdate
```

Read a `state_update`, or `undefined` for any other update. A `stopReason`
that is not a string is dropped rather than passed through.

## Parameters

**update** `SessionUpdate` *required*

## Returns

`undefined | StateUpdate`
